Myofunctional Habits

Poor myofunctional habits (the way we breathe, swallow and our tongue posture) are detrimental to the development of your child’s development and growth. Traditionally, dentists and orthodontists wait until all the permanent teeth have come through to begin treatment. However, conventional braces actually just treat the symptom of the problem – i.e the crooked teeth. I aim to address the underlying cause of the crooked teeth, which is usually poor myofunctional habits.

The Myobrace System is a preventive pre-orthodontic treatment that focuses on addressing the underlying causes of crooked teeth, often without the need for braces or extraction of teeth, unlocking and optimising the natural growth potential and development. Treatment is best suited to children aged 3 to 15 and involves using a series of removable intra-oral appliances that are worn for 1-2 hours each day plus overnight while sleeping.

Myobrace is designed to deal with incorrect myofunctional habits by teaching your child to breathe through their nose, rest the tongue correctly in the roof of the mouth, swallow correctly and continue widening the jaws so they grow to their full and proper size. This results in sufficient room for the teeth, allowing them to come in naturally straight and often without the need for braces.

Benefits of using the Myobrace system:

  • Corrects poor oral habits
  • Develops & aligns the jaws
  • Straightens the teeth
  • Optimises facial development
  • Improves overall health
  • Promotes healthy eating habits
  • Reduces the need for orthodontic treatment later in life

Poor myofunctional habits can be evident from birth, and we want to try to positively manipulate the growth of the child while they are still growing. Waiting for all the permanent teeth to come through isn’t viable, as growth usually slows down by then, and it becomes a lot trickier to retrain your child to develop proper myofunctional habits.
